Five Minute Friday: Quietness

11.09.2012

I love naptime.

There is something peaceful and inviting about a house quiet and at rest. Most of my day is filled with noise of some kind. Cell phones ringing, music playing, people talking, a little boy fussing...but not during naptime.

During that hour the phone is turned off, and everybody gets to rest, quietly.

A few years ago the silence would have driven me crazy! I was the kind of person who had to have the tv on. I couldn't work or function without some sort of noise and entertainment.

But not anymore. Each day I spend hours in the complete quietness of rocking a baby to sleep, reading my Bible, folding laundry, and writing. It gives me time to think. Time to pray. Time to meditate on the things God is teaching me through Scripture.

It's precious time. Time I pray God is using to grow in me a gentle and quiet Spirit.

And I know each day that all too soon my quiet time will come to an end. My son wakes up, my husband comes home for lunch, and once again my home if filled the noise of family, laughter, talking, music and playing (and sometimes screaming and crying!)

And I think I enjoy the noise all the more because of what I learned in the quiet. The gentle lessons of peace, joy, and thankfulness.
"Let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious." 1 Peter 3:4

  1. Visiting from FMF. I've also found that it's in the quiet times where I can regain focus and renew my spirit. I'm learning to embrace solitude with God. :)
