Five Minute Friday: Look

10.19.2012

Look...

We look at a million things a day.

Fall Leaves. Sunshine. Television. Advertisements. Smiling Babies. Dirty Dishes. Latest Fashions. To-Do Lists. The Word of God. Junk Mail. Books. Toys. Road Signs. Recipes. Flying Birds. Bank Statements.

(This is all from just sitting at my kitchen table!)

It's been said that the eyes are a window to the soul, and I think it's true. The things we look at with our eyes have a direct impact on the way we think, feel, and worship. These are soulful things and not be to taken lightly.

Some things we see are just Routine. Ordinary. Useful.

They are the road signs and dirty laundry of life.

Some things we see are Beautiful. Good. Godly.

These are the smiling babies and the changing leaves. These things call us to give thanks and praise to the One who created them.

And still there are things that are Worthless. Vain. Empty.

These are the things that fill our time without building us up. They may be sinful. They may not. But they are not edifying, not encouraging, and not of God.

These are things to be avoided.
Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways. Psalm 119:37
So what are you looking at? My prayer is that we would shun the worthless and vain things around us and cling to the hope and peace of a life filled with Beautiful things.

"Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, In the light of His glory and grace."

  2. A very worthy 5 minutes of writing. It is so important what we "look' upon.
